This is an improvised piece for electric guitar ensemble.
'Stasis' is the first movement of the 'Steel Cathedrals' trilogy. It focuses on the 'pure', 'traditional' colours of the electric guitar (no extended techniques, no preparations or fancy effects), clean or distorted.
I recorded this demo on 18 december 2013.
This piece has been revised since then and now lasts circa 45 minutes, in nine sections
[* = not in this recording] :
I - Absolute Sun
II - Lunar Sea
III - Procession
IV - Desert Music
V - Urban Jungle
VI - Nirvana for swine*
VII - Absolution
VIII - Sigh of the angels
IX - Slaughter of the innocents
'Stasis' is a reflection on the creative process, and the contradictory nature of 'convulsive beauty'. The word means inertia, as in 'an arrest of the blood current' (serenity, the hard way). But it also means 'inner struggle' (vs. 'polemos'). Metaphorically : stone vs. light. A dialectical treatise on various kinds of heavy metals. A psychedelic foray into the arcana of neo-platonism. Really with the spirit, man ! Whatever.
I performed a solo version of "Stasis" in Marseille in december 2013, right before I made this recording.
The ensemble version was premiered in Marseille by Heart of the Sun in february 2015.
This piece belongs to an ongoing series of Modular Improvisations (i.e large scale indeterminate pieces with a road map), like 'Zeitgeist' by Erewhon or 'An index of metals' by Nāda.
" If metallurgy is in an essential relationship with music, it is
through the tendency, common to both arts, to emphasize, beyond
the separate forms, a continuous development of the form, beyond
the variable materials, a continuous variation of matter."
