about

There is more to a performance than meets the ears, if only because the creative process has a mind of its own.
This was the last concert of the series. I had invited guitarist Nicolo Terrasi to replace our trumpet player, Lionel Espagne, who was unavailable that night. Although I had known Nicolo for several years, we had never performed together. The audiences at 'l'Asile 404' are customarily unquiet, albeit tolerant of whatever is presented to them. But that night, we also had a good, and very drunk, heckler. Throughout the concert, he frequently offered many "witty" comments, insults, and some singing. He was clearly determined to have a good time. This video clip gives you a sense of the atmosphere : www.youtube.com/watch?v=_veaZU4omxA
This made the performance feel subjectively harder than it should have been. But, in retrospect, I believe he unintentionally played the role of a catalyst. The music turned out better than we thought at the time. I had to remove most of his numerous interventions (except the inspired ones) from the mix. What's left is a strong piece of music, with a clear sense of direction and determination : a slow descent to Hell, crossing the Acheron and ultimately returning to sunlight, with a vengeance. The reading of Ginsberg's "Howl" (recorded during the soundcheck by Agathe Paysant, who also danced while we played) is a very appropriate spice in the sonic cauldron. Rarely does free improvisation yield such "meaningful" results.
We were supposed to play a second set, but at this point, things had gone out of hand. This was more than what Nicolo could honourably endure. A few minutes into the second set, having been disturbed by some punk (and his dog) while he was playing, he just packed his guitar and left. Smooth jazz was inexplicably heard on the PA. That was it, then.

"Ibant obscuri sola sub nocte per umbram perque domos Ditis vacuas et inania regna : quale per incertam lunam sub luce maligna
est iter in silvis, ubi caelum condidit umbra Juppiter, et rebus nox abstulit atra colorem."
(Virgil - Aeneid VI)
